I had never been more miserable.

It was my 1st Christmas on my own after Mom ("The Christmas Keener") died.  The Wife (& our dog) was shacked up with a slimy Coward & I had moved to Toronto alone for work but wasn't getting much work.  I went to the Horseshoe Tavern where a small, excellent band was playing dixieland (my dead Dad’s fave music) & dixilandish/folk/blues.  Started writing this tune on the streetcar ride home to my new wee apartment filled with boxes that should have been unpacked months before.

"Singing the Pouges, and candle light ..." refers to some Halifax friends (Sue & Pete, Steff & Kev) who host acoustic / sing-along jam parties that are absolutely fantastic events.  Pete helped solve a bass line issue on this tune! The nice sounding voice you hear is Ashleigh's.

LET CHRISTMAS FIND YOU     © 2018 Alan MacLeod     3:24 @ 118 bpm, 4/4

I learned from my Momma and New Orleans

Not all things are as they seems

& ya’ don’t need more stuff

or idyllic scenes

To let Christmas, find you

In a crowd or all alone

in the county lockup or an actual home

when a choir is singing

turn off your phone!

Let Christmas, find you

Woh, Ho, holy night

singing the Pogues in candle light

Woh, Ho, holy night

it won’t kill ya’ to smile

for a little while

Let Christmas, find

you you you you you you you

Let Christmas, find, you

It’s ok, if you’re tough and strong

sayin’ “it starts too early

and goes on too long”

but it won’t blow your cover if you’re humming along

Let Christmas, find you

CHORUS

Yeah, it’s been a while

since you let yourself smile

so stow your sorrow

for tonight and tomorrow

CHORUS

Before social media, we kept in touch with old friends via telephone calls on a “land line”.  I have one friend in particular who, for about 20+ years, always rings me on Christmas Day.  Perhaps this song is a documentary?  The nice sounding voice you hear is Ashleigh's.

To show you what a nut I am, this version is the 18th. substantial revision of this song.  When it first arrived in 2002, it was called Christmas Phone Call.  I'd keep the one section of chording or melody or the line or two I liked & literally trash everything else.  Then, use those parts to start again, make them into a whole song, put it aside, let it fester for a few years & repeat the process.

Recording a song is a similarly annoying process for me.  Now, I figure the recording of a song is done when there's only 5 or 6 things I desperately feel should be changed - ha ha.

Lyrics

OLD FRIENDS     © 2018 Alan P. MacLeod     3:05 @ 170 bpm  3/4

Old friends. Old friends.

We are old friends

And we talk every Christmas

We will chat about the year

share some laughs and our fears

we’ll remember easier days.

When toboggan hills were steep

before laugh-lines got deep

we are lucky to be here

more ache’s and pains each year.

CHORUS

I feel the strength of your smile

cross these thousands of miles

I feel the Spirit, riding this wire.

No matter how I am

I find my soul again

in the warmth of the old songs

in the Faith of those gone.

CHORUS

Like every one

I hope war ends

that no one goes hungry

I hope the earth finds a friend!

Hope you stay as happy

as ya’ sound tonight

Yeah we should.

All right.

CHORUS

Old friends. Old friends.

We are old friends

We are just old friends talkin'

My Dad was a minister & Mom was a Professional Ministers Wife.  They had Faith beyond my comprehension - a Faith I’ll never have but do admire.  So, this is my attempt at explaining the Faith I do have while putting in a little modern context.   In actual fact, I'm horrible at being "a Christian" like Mom & Dad were, but ...

An alternative line for "All the wrong that's been done in the name of The One" is "All the people who've died in the name of my Guy".  I dunno' which line is more accurate.  The nice sounding voice you hear is Ashleigh's.

(Note:  There are about 28 other holidays observed by 7 major religions during the “Christmas season”, I'm hoping they all have songs too!)

ONE LITTLE LIGHT     © 2018 Alan P. MacLeod     3:19 @ 116 bpm, 4/4

One little light, shining in the darkness

One little light, everyone can see

Far from where we are

and a long time ago

A child was born in Bethlehem

As a star shone low

Heaven’s angels told, of Christ the Lord

And the news spread far

That baby grew.  Ohhh, what he went through

and here we are (with)

One little light, shining in the darkness

One little light, everyone can see

One little light, shining in the darkness

One little light, everyone can see

As we’re laying down

To go to sleep

We pray for peace and to the Lord

Our souls to keep

The snow falls down, in this cold old town

It’s a miracle to me

All the wrong that’s been done, in the name of The One

But I still believe (there is)

CHORUS

I hope for you this Christmas

You’ll be loved and safe and free

And I hope you’ll be (The)

One little light, shining in the darkness

One little light, everyone can see

Be the one little light, shining in the darkness

One little  light, everyone can see

Be the one little light, shining in the darkness

The one little light, everyone can see

The 9/11 cowardly terrorist attacks had a really big impact on me.  I was pretty numb for a long time - unable to process the why, or all that happened or all that had & will change, maybe forever. I didn't know anyone killed or impacted but I mourned all of it anyway, on my own.  Horrible things happen but one stumbles along.

I was in a shopping mall months later (still in a state of misery) & suddenly realized …  “oh, it must be Christmas”.  Now, many years later, I’d say this song is about my Mom dying, me missing her, but stumbling along as we all do.

I thought maybe this tune was too sad for publication but ...

Lyrics

CHRISTMAS TIME     © 2018 Alan P. MacLeod     4:28 @ 152 bpm, 6/8

I know, from the lights down town

it’s Christmas time, it must be Christmas time.

Bright decorations, all around

so it’s Christmas time, Christmas time.

But this year it’s hard for me

I ache for the way, it used to be

And I’m scared.

Will I make it through

Can I even have Christmas, with, out, you

With out you.

Oh silent night

Oh Holy night

I’ll be all right

‘Cuz you taught me, it's Christmas time

Christmas time deep in our hearts

Fa la la lala la la.  It’s Christmas time

I know, from the Northern Star

it’s Christmas time, Christmas time.

So many friends, are traveling far

‘cuz it’s Christmas time, it’s Christmas time.

So I, unpack the delicate things

Remembering, the stories you’d bring

And I smile, what else can I do

But try to have Christmas, just, for, you

In honour of you.

CHORUS

I am done, with all my false starts

I’m gonna' string up some lights.  Gonna' brighten the dark

& I’ll be strong.  Strong as my memory of you.

And I will have Christmas, for me, and you

For me and for you too

Oh silent night

Oh Holy night

I’ll be all right

‘Cuz you taught me, it's Christmas time

You taught me

It's Christmas time deep in our hearts

So fa la la lala la!

Story

Everyone who travels a lot or has a job that sucks up far too much of their time or works shifts or works far from home knows what it’s like to not be with those you love when you desperately want to be with them.

In this song, it worked out OK.  Hopefully, you too can connect with the ones you love & that connection will fill your heart.  Keep trying.

Lyrics

FAR FROM YOU     © 2018 Alan P. MacLeod     3:34 @ 98 bpm, 6./8

I’ve been strong since you’ve gone

(As if I had a choice dear)

Alone near the phone

But I need you right here 'cuz

Christmas is commin’, and you’re not around!

All I want is you home safe, and sound

Far from you.  So far from you

The snow piles high and the winds howl through

Far from you.  So far from you

Tonight I feel, so far away from you

You say, “hey we’re doing fine

leave on the hall light

and sleep now

sleep through the cold night

and we’ll both dream, like lovers do

as frost paints the windows, I’ll dream with you”

CHORUS

These long hours will pass

These hard times will not last

There will be days and weeks and then years

when I’m not far from you

Far from you.  Not far from you

Let the snow pile high.  Let the winds blow too

Far from you.  Not far from you

Now I don’t feel, so far away from you
